Shutters are becoming more and more popular due to the fact that they, among others, give additional protection, contribute to energy savings, protect from sunlight and improve the appearance of the façade.
“Our systems can be used for:
☛ sliding or hinged shutters
☛ made of any material, for example wood, aluminum, PVC
☛ opened manually or powered,
☛ the drives can be integrated into a “smart home” control system.”
Sliding shutters with aluminum SAF and WIN-SlIDE R guide rails are especially recommend with the electric drive option, which gives a real sense of comfort. The shutters can be opened and closed without leaving home, and even without opening the windows, using a remote control. There are many possibilities for assembling and moving shutters by using single or double aluminum guide rails. Shutters can work as single on one guide rail, sliding to either side of the window, synchronized on one guide rail, sliding to both sides of the window, or in a telescopic arrangement, sliding to one side of the window on two parallel guide rails. The latter option is used when there is not enough space for the shutter panels on one side of the window. The aluminum cover provides protection for the drive, and its elegant simple shape matches any façade. The system is completely safe – the sliding stops automatically when an obstacle is encountered.
Shutter weight up to 80kg, thickness from 27 to 40mm.
Sliding shutters with steel guide rail – SPORTUBE and HERCULE systems, made of galvanized steel, are an economical, durable and reliable solution. Trolley components, shutter fastenings and guides are made of stainless steel. The basic kit is designed for shutters weighing up to 80kg, but there are also versions for 150 or even 400kg – shutter thickness from 25mm up.
“WIBAT and WIBAT-APP automatic powered hinged shutters are exceptionally aesthetic. The system is based on electric actuators which act as hinges. The motor, which is hidden under the hinge housing, is built into the wall, making it virtually invisible. The motor can be electronically controlled, e.g. in a “smart home” system. The system is completely safe – the movement stops automatically when an obstacle is encountered. The actuators do not require any adjustment owing to the self-programming system which adjusts to the weight of the shutters and the opening angle.
Shutter weight up to 50kg, width from 300 to 800mm, shutter area 1.6m².”
WIN-FOLD sliding folded shutters with aluminum guide rail, which can be mounted in a window recess or on outer wall, allow the use of a larger number of panels. The system is designed for panels of a width of up to 300mm for wall mounting and up to 600mm for recess mounting. Shutter weight up to 30kg, thickness 26 to 36mm.
Measuring the width and height of the opening
Guide rails for each shutter system must be fixed horizontally.
When the shutter is to be built in the window recess, you should very carefully, using a measuring tape and a bubble level, measure the size of the recess and all angles between the sides and the window sill and the top of the recess. After drawing the dimensions on the paper, you need to find the largest rectangle that will fit into the recess. This rectangle must stand perfectly vertically. The rectangle’s height and width are the values that define the size of the structure. Based on this, using the assembly instructions for the system in question, calculate the width, height and number of shutters panels.
Slightly different rules apply to mounting shutters on the building wall. Shutters should cover the window, but there are no guidelines as to whether the shutters should be larger than the window opening – this depends on the architectural design of the building. By measuring carefully the opening, after drawing the dimensions on the paper, find the smallest rectangle that will cover the contour of the opening. The height and width of this rectangle will define the minimum size of the shutter. After determining the dimensions, you need to define – based on the assembly instructions of the system – other values, such as the length of the guide rail and the size of shutter panels, and possibly the number of wings.
In WIN-SLIDE R, SAF, SPORTUB and HERCULE sliding shutter systems with a single guide rail, the rail is at least twice as long as the shutter width.
WIN-SLIDE R and SAF systems allow simultaneous opening of two shutters in a symmetrical or telescopic arrangement. In a symmetrical arrangement in WIN-SLIDE R and SAF systems, the guide rail must be at least four times longer than the shutter width, while in the telescopic arrangement the length of each guide rail is twice the shutter width. Shutters always have equal width.
The guides should be cut to the required length.
Bottom rail systems for shutters
Bottom rail must be adapted to the overall design. It must ensure stable movement of the shutter, minimize sliding resistance, and reduce “rocking” of the shutter perpendicular to the window.
Bottom rail solutions are presented below. Each of the presented cases meets applicable technical requirements.
Bottom rail fixed to the façade
Profiles used in bottom rail solutions fixed to the façade:
Guiding with angle bars fixed to the wall for a single shutter

Guides used in solutions with a channel bar fixed to the window sill or floor:
Fixing to the wall and/or ceiling
Guide rails for shutters may be mounted to the building’s outside wall and to the ceiling within the window recess. The latter method is only possible when there is enough room for the system in the window recess.
There are following types of sliding shutter systems, when it comes to mounting to the ceiling and walls:
System name | Mounting method |
WIN-SLIDE R | to wall |
SAF | to the ceiling and to the wall |
SPORTUB | to the ceiling and to the wall |
HERCULE | to ceiling or wall*) |
JUPITER | to ceiling or wall*) |
*) no system covers available for mounting to the ceiling
The WIN-SLIDE R system has a precise 3D guide rail adjustment system. This is possible due to the special design of the bracket mounted to the wall, but this makes the system more expensive than the SAF system. Although fixing the WIN-SLIDE R system to the ceiling is technically possible, this is not economically reasonable.
Number of guide rail fixing points
WIN-SLIDE and SAF guide rails are delivered with holes for fixing to the ceiling with screws. Hole spacing is 500mm.
As it was said before, mounting WIN-SLIDE R to the ceiling is not economically reasonable, but since SAF and WIN-SLIDE R systems work on the same guide rail, it is pre-drilled.
All other guide rails are mounted with brackets and not pre-drilled. Bracket spacing for shutters is always 500mm. This is because of increased safety margin needed with regard to wind load.
In sliding systems for industrial doors and gates, this spacing is larger: 700mm.
Choosing a method for mounting SPORTUB system guide rails
Depending on the installation layout, type of wall or ceiling to which the guide rails will be mounted, you can choose from a number of clamps, brackets and bracket holders.
SPORTUB guide rails can be fixed to the wall or to the ceiling, fasteners can be screwed or welded.
General principles that must be observed when choosing the system components are presented below.

The purpose of this article is to assist you in choosing the right system for doors, shutters or heavy industrial doors and gates, and to provide all the necessary information for proper assembly of the system components.
The instructions are accompanied by assembly videos where we show the most important steps of assembly for each system.
Choosing the heavy industrial door system
The key factor for choosing the industrial door system is the door weight.
VALCOMP offers systems for sliding doors and gates weighing:
☛ up to 80kg.
☛ up to 150kg.
☛ up to 400kg.
☛ up to 2000kg.
The warranty for our systems covers 100,000 opening and closing cycles, which, assuming that the doors are opened up to 10 times a day, gives 25 years of trouble-free operation of the system.
Measuring the width and height of the opening for sliding doors
Guide rails for each sliding door and gate system must be mounted horizontally to prevent the door from unintended moving.
Heavy passage doors and gates are always mounted on the wall of the building, and their purpose is to cover the opening in the wall. By measuring carefully the opening, find the smallest rectangle that will cover the contour of the opening. The height and width of this rectangle will define the minimum size of the door. After determining the height and width, you need to define – based on the assembly instructions – other values, such as the length of the guide rail and the size of the door/gate wing.
In SPORTUB and HERCULE sliding door systems with a single guide rail, the rail is at least twice as long as the door width.
The guides should be cut to the required length.
Fixing to the wall and/or ceiling
Guide rails for industrial door and gate sliding systems can be mounted to the wall or ceiling. In these systems, there are no covers for guide rails.
Number of brackets for guide rail assembly
Maximum spacing of mounting brackets for industrial door and gate sliding door systems up to 500kg is 700mm. For heavier doors, the bracket spacing is up to 500mm.
Choosing the assembly method for the SPORTUB industrial door sliding system
Depending on the installation layout, type of wall or ceiling to which the guide rails will be mounted, you can choose from a number of clamps, brackets and bracket holders.
SPORTUB guide rails can be fixed to the wall or to the ceiling, fasteners can be screwed or welded.
General principles that must be observed when choosing the system components are presented below.
Recommended methods of mounting adjustable guide rails:
Choosing the guide rail profile for the HERCULE steel gantry
The light gantry is built of components available in the HERCULE monorail transport section. The only components in the gantry category are rigid and moving transverse trolleys and direction guides which determine the route of the trolley with the transported object.
Explanations of calculation of the dimensions on the drawing:
A = ½ × trolley width + fender length
B = ½ x trolley width + fender length + number of trolleys × length of mobile trolleys
C – traverse beam (crossbeam) of the gantry
D – reinforcing flat bar (if necessary) of the crossbeam
E – mounting bracket for the crossbeam reinforcement
F – transverse trolley connecting the gantry crossbeam with the track
G – long fender
H – trolley + hook or link
I – mobile trolley
J – handles for hanging the gantry track
L – gantry span
The size of guide rail profile for the steel gantry beams should be chosen according to the gantry span and the load.
To find the right size of the guide rail for the actual load and span of the gantry, do the following steps. Find the point of intersection of the load capacity – e.g. 250kg for a 3.5m span, as shown above. You can see that point falls between the strength limit curves 9060 and 9070 rails without reinforcements. In such case, always choose the higher rail, in this case 9070 without reinforcements.
The same principle applies to choosing the rail from the table below. This table contains extensive information on gantry rail reinforcements with flat bars.

In wardrobe systems, the guide rail length is always equal to the width of the inside of the wardrobe.
For passage door, the guide rail is at least twice as long as the door leaf width.
The guides should be cut to the required length.
The exception is the IKAR system, mounted on both sides of the edge, where the guide rails have a fixed length. In this single case, nonstandard guide rails are available only on request.
There are two types of sliding door systems: with top rail and with bottom rail.
For bottom rail, the door rollers lie on the bottom guide rail and roll along it. The upper guide only stabilizes the position of the door.
In top rail systems, the door hangs on trolleys which roll on the top guide rail. The advantage of this type is the lack of the lower guide rail – no obstacles for walking or moving objects. The bottom of the door only needs to be stabilized by a guide.
Examples of systems with bottom rail::
☛ ARES2
☛ ARES3
☛ TW
Systems with top rail:
☛ HORUS,
☛ SARA,
☛ APIS,
☛ HERKULES 60,
☛ HERKULES 120,
☛ HERKULES GLASS,
☛ SATURN,
☛ JUPITER,
☛ HERKULES PLUS 25 i
☛ HERKULES PLUS 40
IKAR and APOLLO systems do not belong to any of these groups.
Fixing to the wall and/or ceiling
Guide rails for door systems with top rail can be mounted on the ceiling, the ceiling or wall, or only to the wall.
Therefore, the systems may be identified by this feature in the following way:
System name | Mounting method |
Apis | to ceiling |
Herkules 60 i 120 | to ceiling or wall |
Herkules Plus 25 i 40 | to ceiling |
Hermes | to wall |
Saturn | to ceiling or wall |
Jupiter | to ceiling or wall |
Mounting holes for guiding rails
Guiding rails are delivered with holes for fixing with screws. Each set of fittings also includes the necessary number of screws.
In ARES2, ARES3 and APIS systems, guide rail do not have mounting holes. For ARES2 and ARES3 systems, holes must be made in accordance with the assembly instructions.
For APIS guide rails, holes must be made as for rails with top rail, i.e. with 290mm spacing.
The maximum spacing of fixing screws is:
for aluminum guide rails: 290 mm for systems with top rail
for steel guide rails: 700 mm
When guiding rails are mounted to chipboard, use 3.5 x 16 screws. Holes in the guide rails: Ø4.5 mm.
The all-purpose guide, developed by our engineers, can be used for various sliding doors systems.
Due to its design, it can be used as a bracket inside which the door is sliding,
or – if the door has a channel – as an invisible guide, sliding inside the door.
Different applications of the guide are shown on the drawings below.
How to use the all-purpose guide:

Cleaning of glass before mounting HERKULES GLASS clamps
☛ The clamps can only be properly fitted on the glass surface when both the glass and elastomer inserts are perfectly degreased.
When the glass surface is very dirty, the attached tissue soaked with alcohol may not be sufficient to properly clean the glass. In this case, it’s necessary to clean the glass with a clean cotton cloth and alcohol. Do not use denatured alcohol, use ethyl alcohol only.
☛ Even if the glass looks clean, it may be covered with remnants of cleaning agents used in glass factories in production and processing. This shows as streaks during cleaning. Streaks must be completely removed, because they can reduce friction that holds the glass in the clamps. Complaints caused by this will not be accepted.
☛ Inserts should be put into the clamps without touching the surfaces in contact with glass with fingers or dirty tools. After installing, the wipe the inserts with the attached tissue or cloth with alcohol.
☛ Do not push the clamps on the glass by force. If the space in the clamp is too small, you need to expand the brackets with screws, driving them into special threaded holes on the back side of the clamp – see assembly instructions, point 8
☛ When tightening the screws, press the clamp firmly by hand so that it doesn’t rise. The mounting screws should be tightened carefully and evenly for all the screws – see assembly manual: point 9. If you tighten the screws too much, leave them as they are, do not unscrew them.
☛ Never tighten the screws when the door is already hanging in the guide rail!
☛ If you need to take the brackets off and remount them afterwards, keep strictly to these above rules.
☛ Assembly is naturally possible without the use of a torque wrench. To make sure that the clamp is tightened as it should, observe the behaviour of the inserts – when the inserts “flow out” of the clamp, you can be sure that the clamp is properly tightened.
☛ All information regarding the assembly is included in the instructions, you can also watch the instructional video.
☛ If you have any questions, please contact us.
A sliding door stopper is a component that prevents the door from sliding. It must be placed on the wall in a place that prevents the door from tilting.
